Knowing What's in-store - REVCO ELECTRIC CO.

- was formerly THOMPSON'S EMPORIUM -

By DANNY McCARTHY

    Just by “going write-on-ahead” because I know-how-to ~ I checked by typesetting Emporium within the Southold Town Hall Laserfiche program to check for possible related information re:

THOMPSON’s EMPORIUM and I found info! {so-to-speak!}:

    The 4/13/1987 Southold Town Planning Board minutes are “logged-in” online & I located this:

    “irwin Thomspon {stet} – The Board reviewed this site plan located at Main Road, Soutold {stet} for construction of a building for retail sales. The Board made a field inspection of the property. It was the consensus of the Board to meet with Mr. Thompson, applicant, to discuss this proposal.”

    The July 6, 1987 Southold Town Planning Board minutes included this;

    “ … On a motion made by Mr. Latham and seconded by Mr. Mullen, it was RESOLVED that the Southold Town Planning Board refer the site plan for Thompson’s Emporium for construction of a 40’ x 50’ retail building located at Main Road, Southold to the Building Department for certification ; survey dated as amended July 2, 1987. …”

    The October 30, 2000 Southold Town Planning Board – Work Session carried this:

    “Site Plans … Thompson’s Emporium, Main Road, Southold … Request for change of use from retail store to pizzeria restaurant { & it ended there! }

    All right {not half-left like in politics} – – AND I came across a July 23, 1998 The Suffolk Times article featuring “Gardiner’s Island vs. time and tide as a new battle is under way to save the colonial landmark.”

It was ironic that in order for me to scan-in the first page of this article there was a Thompson's Emporium ad that had to be included. Thompson’s Emporium on the Main Road in Southold closed.

As I delved-further, I also came across an August 6, 1998 The Suffolk Times article re: Fort Corchaug clash goes on. The original xerox copy got bent, so some of the copy is missing, but the article is relevant. The ad for Thompson’s Emporium is important again since it was placed from “that year since the store closed.”

    Thanks go out to The Suffolk Times reporter Beth Young who went on to run EAST END BEACON ~ She had a May 13, 2011 The Suffolk Times article:

    “Southold summers have been less complete since Thompson’s Emporium closed several years ago, leaving hamlet residents with nowhere to go to pick up a beach pail, a badminton racket or sunblock and sunglasses for a trip down to the water’s edge.

    Southold resident Peggy Killian, co-owner of Eastern Tire in Cutchogue, has missed Thompson’s Emporium badly and, judging from her conversations with friends and neighbors at the post office and around town, she’s not alone.

    If you needed something, they always had it. They were open a long time, she said.

    After Thompson’s closed, Ms. Killian began thinking about the possibility of opening a similar shop in Southold. But it wasn’t until the Arcade in Greenport, which carried variety store items similar to Thompson’s Emporium, closed last winter that she decided to jump head first into the retail business.

    This Saturday, her new shop, Southold Emporium, will open on the south side of Main Street in the space that had been Lamps by Vincent and, before that, Frohnhoefer’s Electric.”

NOW THERE’S A TRUE AND REAL DYNAMIC COMBINATION OF INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSES ALIGNED WITHIN THE BUILDING:

Century 21 Albertson Realty {where TOM SCALIA is a representative agent} & Body Smart {run by CHRIS CZARTOSIESKI}!

    HERE'S HISTORY OF REVCO AS TAKEN FROM ITS ONLINE HOMEPAGE ~ I ADJUSTED THE FONT:

    “REVCO Lighting + Electrical Supply has been serving the industry since 1978. The first lighting showroom and branch opened at 403 Griffing Avenue, in Riverhead, New York. Today, REVCO has six locations. The corporate office is located in the Southampton, New York.

    After working in a family business for nearly thirty years, with his brother Michael Velys Sr., Ross Velys and his wife, Theodora, decided to start a lighting + electrical supply business of his own.

    Lighting has always been a vital part of REVCO’s success. Theodora, known affectionately by her friends as “Teddy,” has always had a special love and true understanding of lighting. The design layouts of the Southampton, Southold and Miller Place showrooms are a tribute to her knowledge of the lighting industry.

    REVCO has grown over the years and is currently employing 70+ employees.

    REVCO now has six branches. They are located in Riverhead, Southampton, East Hampton, Southold, Miller Place and most recently in Bohemia.”

WELL OVER HERE ~ WELL DOWN BELOW ~ IS AN OVERVIEW THAT I “CUT-AND-PASTED” FROM THE REVCO LIGHTING & ELECTRICAL LINKEDIN.COM ENTRY {especially being that I myself am a LINKEDIN.COM SUBSCRIBER AND JUST BEING ABLE TO SHED SOME LIGHT ABOUT THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS AMAZING} ~ I ADJUSTED THE FONT FOR THIS TOO:

    The East Hampton Star dated June 12, 2003 featured an Our Organizations column that included:

    “The Red Light

The Dark Sky Society has presented a Good Neighbor Lighting Award to Revco Electrical Supply on County Road 39 in Southampton.

    The award sites the store’s championing of good lighting fixtures, advocacy of lighting regulations, and its work with architects and builders to promote dark-sky-friendly lighting.”

   The East Hampton Star dated July 3, 2003 “incorporated” a Letter to the Editor that was sent-in from a resident named SUSAN HARDER {of the} DARK SKY SOCIETY:

    “ … Any business or institution that has these LIPA {nightlights} should consider alternatives. There are many available, and I can recommend contacting Revco Electric in Southampton, since they are pro-actively adding to their line of {fully-shielded} fixtures.”
