Michael Brown GoFundMe Page To Benefit Greenport Scholarships
This year, the Miles for Mike 5K Walk/Run will take place Saturday at Greenport High School, remembering Michael Brown's joyful spirit.

February 2 marked six years since Greenport’s beloved Michael Brown died after a public transit bus collided with his car in Riverhead.
He was only 21 years old.
Michael, who was on his way to class at Suffolk County Community College, was ”a beloved member of the community because of his friendly personality and kind and warm spirit. He was also an inspiration to many because he never allowed his disability of cerebral palsy to defeat him or deter him from accomplishing his dreams, such as attending college,” his sister Karre Brown said.

The Michael Brown Scholarship Fund was created because education was so important to him, his sister added.
To that end, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise funds for scholarships.

Miles for Mike, a fundraising event for the Michael Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund, is a grassroots initiative working to provide academic scholarships to college bound and special needs students in the local community of Greenport.
This year, the Miles for Mike 5K Walk/Run will take place on May 14, 2016 at Greenport High School, as it did last year.
The initial fundraising event was a community chicken fry, where all donated proceeds provided two annual scholarships of $500 each.
Last year was the first annual 5K walk/run. The event garnered $5,000, used to award eight scholarships and one grant to a special needs teen.
“Thank you in advance for considering this request. We are a non-profit organization working for the better enrichment of youth and sincerely believe you can help make Miles for Mike 5K Walk/Run a major success,” the GoFundMe page said.
