GREENPORT, NY — It's official: The 34th Annual Greenport Maritime Festival is a washout.

The event was postponed due to the forecast for heavy winds and rain expected this weekend.

"Out of abundance of caution, it has been decided by the East End Seaport Museum in consultation with Southold Town Police Department and Greenport Village officials, that the gala on Friday will go on as scheduled," said organizer Diane Tucci.

However, the festival, scheduled for Saturday the 23 and Sunday the 24, has been canceled, she said.

"We must cancel due to the potential Tropical Cyclone 16. It is with great disappointment to all, after a full year of planning to have to postpone until Septemer 21 and 22, 2024," she sid.

Tracey Orlando, executive director of the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, which hosts the event, said the main concern is the 38-mile-per hour winds that are expected.

"This is not an event that can be rescheduled," she said.

However, Orlando said, no matter what's decided, the Land & Sea Gala will take place as planned on Friday.

Those who attend the Maritime Festival normally enjoy classic boat displays, kayak races, music, children’s activities, maritime demonstrations, roving Sea Shanties and vendors. The event also features a Merfolk parade and for the first time this year — a Cardboard Boat Races had been planned for Sunday.
