Police: Reports of Possible Gunshots Near Mattituck High School

The incident occurred during a girls soccer game on Tuesday evening.

Southold Town Police responded to Mattituck Jr. Sr. High School on reports of three possible gunshots in the area on Tuesday evening, according to Chief Martin Flatley.

The report came in at about 5:40 p.m. during a Varsity girls soccer game when “spectators and staff heard what sounded like gun shots in the area,” Superintendent of Schools Anne Smith wrote in a message to families.

The teachers and staff brought everyone into the school gym while police investigated, according to Flatley.

“All spectators and students were calm and following the direction of our dedicated staff and Southold Town Police,” Smith wrote.

Police declared the area safe and the students were sent home a short time later.

Staff members directed everyone outside on the field inside until police told them that it was ok to send everyone home. The campus was then closed for the evening as a precaution, according to Smith.

Police couldn’t verify on whether the sound that was reportedly heard was actually gunshots. They did a door to door check of the neighborhood and didn’t find anything, Flatley said.

Smith said police also provided a presence on Wednesday as a precaution.

The incident is still being investigated.
