NORTH FORK, NY — Sophie, a sweet shelter dog who captured the hearts of North Fork community members that rallied to help her when she needed surgery, is recuperating after the successful medical procedure.

Now, according to advocates at The League in Aquebogue, Sophie is resting at the shelter. "We appreciate all of you who help us do the work we do," said Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at The League's locations in Peconic and Aquebogue.

Sophie is still available for adoption, she said.

Sophie was brought to The League in early January as part of a domestic dispute.

"The police were called and they ended up bringing Sophie to us to get her out of the home environment," she said. "Her human dad left and never came back to reclaim her at the shelter."

Sophie, Stroup said, was originally very scared when first brought in and would stay in one spot in her kennel.

"Over time her true personality has come out — and she is a super sweet dog," she said.

Sophie is a 6-year-old female pit bull mix and is a big fan of cookies and cuddles. She is quiet in her kennel and is very neat. She is potty-trained and walks well on a leash. She wants all of the attention, however, and would need to be the only animal in the home, she said.

Sophie was initially facing a medical crisis.

Veterinarians found a growth that started off very small and increased in size rapidly, Stroup said.

Now, Sophie has a second chance at life. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and chipped. She is currently available to visit at The League's Riverhead location at 324 Church Lane in Aquebogue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
