Shelter Island Highway Worker Struck By Vehicle, Airlifted: Police

BREAKING: A Shelter Island highway department worker was struck by a vehicle and airlifted with "serious, traumatic injuries," police say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A Shelter Island highway employee was airlifted after being struck by a car Wednesday, police said.

According to Shelter Island Police, the crash took place at 8:52 a.m. when town employee Robert J. Gorkoff, 60, was out of his vehicle, shoveling patch into a pothole.

A vehicle driven by Alan Shaw, 79, of Shelter Island, was traveling south on New York State Route 114, who apparently did not see the highway truck or employee, and struck Gorkoff, police said.

Shaw's vehicle continued forward and struck the back of the parked town highway truck, police said.

Gorkoff sustained "serious, traumatic injuries," was treated at the scene by Shelter Island EMS, and then transported to a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter, which airlifted him to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, police said.

Shaw was also transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries that he sustained during the crash during the accident; his car was impounded for further evaluation and safety inspection, police said.

Although the crash remains under investigation, no criminal charges are expected, police said.
