LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island is set to see snowfall Monday night into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Brian Ciemnecki, meteorologist with the NWS office at Upton, said a winter weather advisory is in effect for Nassau County, but not Suffolk. A light snowfall is expected to overspread the region Monday night, beginning at midnight or possibly a bit earlier.

Snow is expected to last through the night into Tuesday. In Suffolk County, he said, the temperatures could warm just enough to have that snowfall change over to some rain, possibly ending once again in a brief period of snow.

In Nassau County, where the winter weather advisory is in effect, snow will continue to fall through morning, Ciemnecki said. Overall, about 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected across Suffolk County, with 2 to 3 inches forecast for Nassau County.

Portions of western Suffolk could also see 2 to 3 inches, he said.

Temperatures on Long Island overnight are expected to drop into the mid 20s; during the day on Tuesday they are slated to rise to the mid 30s in Nassau County and to the mid-to-upper 30s across Suffolk. "You can't rule out a 40-degree temperature at Montauk," Ciemnecki said

Winds are not expected to be an issue with the weather event, likely around 10 miles per hour, and "fairly light," Ciemnecki said. No coastal flooding is expected, he added.
