Still No Home For Dog In LI Shelter For Months — Brought Back In 1 Day
"I don't understand why nobody wants me. I try so hard to make someone notice me." A letter from Mathis written by shelter staff.

NORTH FORK, NY — A dog who broke hearts with his sad story of being left at a shelter for eight long months and then, was brought back just a day after being adopted, is still, still waiting for his forever home.
"We’ve had a ton of interest, but no takers," said Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at the League in Peconic where Mathis still waits hopefully. "He's very friendly."
However, Stroup added, Mathis is "high energy and can be destructive, so people are shying away."

That doesn't mean Mathis doesn't deserve a chance. He just needs time and training, Stroup said.
"I’m sending him today to doggie boot camp. We also are offering free training once day a week after adoption. So if anyone is interested, they can call to make an appointment to see him," she said.

"Mathis has been in the shelter system eight months," Stroup reminded. "He will require some time to decompress and training. The adopter for him is someone with time and patience."
She added: "He has been in the shelter system so long, he needs to learn how to live in a home."
Stroup said Mathis is a 50-lb. Border collie mix. He's very good with other dogs, and has tested well with cats, she added.
"I would not see an issue with him and kids," she said.
Stroup wrote a message for Mathis: "Please don’t make me wait any longer. I’m Mathis and I’ve been in the shelter system since July — eight long months of watching families walk right by me."
She added, for Mathis: "I don’t understand why nobody wants me. I try so hard to make someone notice me. The staff asks all the time why I’m still at the shelter. Please help me get out. I’m getting sad and starting to feel very unwanted. I promise to be on my best behavior and be your best friend. Please, someone, just give me a chance."
Mathis can be found at the Peconic shelter, located at 269 Peconic Lane. To meet Mathis, or for additional information, call 631-765-1811, Ext. 1.
