Supervisor Outlines Possible Duties for Proposed New Part-Time Youth Bureau Director
The person hired would work to address enhanced mental health services for North Fork Youth — and possibly establish a youth court.

SOUTHOLD, NY- Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell unveiled possible plans Tuesday for duties that could be assigned to a new part-time town youth bureau director, when the position is filled.
The Southold Town board has discussed hiring a part-time youth director since former Special Projects Director Phillip Beltz retired last year.
At Tuesday’s town board work session, Russell said there are a number of civil service titles to choose from; first steps involve creating a duties statement to see what title civil service would think fits, he said.

The town board said they would support the position.
Russell said he envisioned the part-time youth director planning events and coordinating with the town’s recreation department, working with different age groups. He aid one idea would be to orchestrate with business leaders in the community to create internships.

The person would also direct youth board meetings he said, as well as pursue grants and funding for programs.
“We would look for this person to focus on youth issues that we simply didn’t have the staffing to do in the past,” Russell said.
The supervisor said he’d one priority would be to work with other organizations such as the Family Service League to expand mental health services for youth on the North Fork.
“ Evaluating the viability of establishing a ’youth court’ is another,’ he said. “Both Southampton and Riverhead have a similar program.”
The goal would be to work with the district attorney’s office, local police and local attorneys to promote programs for youthful offenders instead of the traditional justice system, Russell said.
