3 Shelter Dogs Desperate To Be Home For Christmas

"All 3 are beginning to show signs of giving up after continually being passed by. Let's make these dogs' dreams come true for Christmas."

PECONIC, NY — The familiar holiday tune, "I'll Be Home For Christmas," echoes at the North Fork Animal Welfare League in Peconic — but for the shelter dogs who have spent seemingly endless days waiting for forever families, the words are a fervent hope . . . and a distant dream.

"The staff and volunteers are praying these three old-timers will find homes before Christmas," Gabrielle Stroup of the NFAWL said. "All three are beginning to show signs of giving up on a forever home after continually being passed by at the shelter. They are so special. All of their adoption fees are paid, so please spread the word and let's make these dogs' dreams come true for Christmas."

Rox is a 12-year-old female who came to the shelter more than a year ago; she weighs about 50 lbs. "This poor girl has had a rough life ending up in the shelter after her family broke up when she was 11 years old. She’s a sweet old girl who likes to go for car rides and lounge on the sofa," Stroup said. "She is very loyal and will be your best friend." Rox is probably best in a single pet home, she said.

Sasha is a 5-year old female brindle mix who arrived at the shelter 11 months ago; she weighs about 60 lbs. "She spent most of her life locked up without human contact. She came in totally untrained and now sits, walks great on a leash, and loves treats," Stroup said. "She loves people. She is looking for her person and will be a great companion. She is very active and loves the outdoors."

But living without a home is wearing on the sweet dog: Sasha is getting more and more dog selective, vying for attention in the shelter.
