Town Honors 375th Anniversary Committee, Who Poured Love into Keeping Memories Alive

A series of events including Mile Marker Day and a kickoff at Brecknock Hall marked Southold Town's 375th year.

SOUTHOLD, NY-Although the project seemed daunting at first, with deadlines looming, Southold Town’s 375th Anniversary Committee worked tirelessly to create a year of memories for residents, Councilman Bob Ghosio said Tuesday night as he honored members at a town board meeting.

From a kickoff celebration at Brecknock Hall, which drew almost 300 to celebrate the town’s rich history, to a well-attended Mile Marker Day that Ghosio said has breathed new life into the historic stone markers on Main Road — local Scouts are now working to restore the markers — to a parade, the town’s 375th anniversary has been embraced by all.

All local schoolchildren helped work on a project to commemorate the event. And, to cap off the festivities, a time capsule was buried at Silversmith’s Corner on Main Road, filled with memories.

Ghosio gave each committee member a proclamation and thanked them for their hard work and dedication. Each member of the town board also received a 375th anniversary mug.

Herb Adler, who chaired the committee, said he wasn’t sure he’d be in town for the 400th event, but Ghosio assured him that he’d share his legacy for generations to come.
