Voters' Guide 2016: Mattituck School District Budget, Board of Education Election

A heated race for the board of election has seven candidates vying for three open seats.

MATTITUCK, NY - Mattituck-Cutchogue residents will be voting on the school district’s $40,333,931 proposed budget for the 2016-17 school year on Tuesday, May 17.

The total budget decrease is -1.44 percent while the tax rate would increase 0.13 percent over the current year’s rate.

A heated race is on as seven candidates face off for three open seats on the Board of Education. Candidates include incumbent William Gatz, George Haase, Edward Hassildine, MaryLynn Hoeg, Brian Mealy, Barbara Talbot and Tonya Kaiser-Witczak.

The two highest vote-getters will each serve three-year terms, while the third highest vote-getter will be elected to serve a one-year term, in the seat of Gerry Diffley, who did not complete his term.

Voting begins at 3 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. in the Mattituck High School gym.
