'We're Devastated': Shamrock Christmas Tree Farm Won't Open This Year

NORTH FORK, NY — A beloved Christmas tree farm, where generations of holiday memories have been made, will not be open this holiday season — but owners vow to be back next year.

The Shamrock Christmas Tree Farm, located at 20685 Main Road in Mattituck, announced the painful news on social media Wednesday.

"With a heavy heart, we have decided not to open for the 2023 season," owners Cathleen and Joe Shipman said. "After 28 consecutive years, unforeseen circumstances have led to making this very difficult decision."

A shortage of Fraser firs has made it difficult to fulfill growing needs for both quality and quantity pre-cuts, they said.

"Our largest field is nearly ready to be opened, but realistically, needs one more growing season," the Shipmans said. "We thank all of you have made our farm part of your yearly family tradition. All of us at Shamrock wish you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the 2024 season."

Cathleen Shipman spoke with Patch about the decision and assured it was temporary. "We will definitely be open next year," she said.

Sadness lingered over the news. "We’re devastated," she said. The couple made the decision Tuesday night after learning that an expected tree delivery wouldn't transpire. "It was a very hard decision," she said, adding that they were "despondent over the whole thing."

However, the Shipmans have chosen to look ahead with positivity. "We're going to get through this — we have our health — but it's hard," Cathleen said.
