Woman Airlifted After 56-Foot Yacht Runs Aground On Plum Island

The yacht hit a rock before running aground, police say.

NORTH FORK, NY — A woman was airlifted after a yacht ran aground on Plum Island, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place on Sunday at 3:29 p.m. on the southeast side of Plum Island when Southold Bay Constables John Kirincic and Kristopher Dimon rushed to the scene to assist the United States Coast Guard.

While in Gardiners Bay, Mark Shikowitz, 64, of Syosset, who was aboard a 56-foot Hatteras, "hit a rock then veered to the north and went aground on the rocks along the southeastern shore of the island," police said.

A female passenger, Lauren Shikowitz, was airlifted from Plum Island to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries, including those to her jaw, police said.

No charges were filed, police said.
