29-Year-Old Man From Northport Who Was Aide to Steve Bellone Killed in LIE Crash
BREAKING: Scott Martella was among three people ID as those killed in crash Sunday morning. His fiancée from Northport was injured.

Suffolk Police have released details on a horrific crash on the Long Island Expressway Sunday morning that killed five people, including a 29-year-old Northport man, and injured many others.
According to police, 26-year-old Carmelo Pinales, of Hicksville, was driving a gray Subaru Outback east on the LIE when he apparently lost control of the vehicle, which then crossed over the grassy median, went airborne and struck two vehicles, a BMW and a Honda, that were traveling west near Exit 68 in Manorville at about 9:35 a.m.
Pinales and his sister, Patricia Pinales, 27, of Westbury, were pronounced dead at the scene. Carmelo Pinales's 10-year-old son, Christopher Pinales, was transported in critical condition to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter. Christopher Pinales later died from his injuries.

The other two people in the Suburu–Winnifer Garcia, 21, of Hempstead, and Patricia Pinales's 3-year-old daughter, also of Westbury, were transported to local hospitals, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the 2014 Honda, Scott Martella, 29, of Northport, was pronounced dead at the scene. His fiancée, Shelbi Thurau, 29, of Northport, was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Marvin Tenzer, 73, the driver of the 2016 BMW, and his three passengers, Sandra Tenzer, 69, Helen Adelson, and Isidore Adelson, 81, all of Westhampton, were transported to local hospitals following the crash. Helen and Isidore Andelson later died from their injuries.

Detectives are investigating reports that Carmelo Pinales, the driver of the Subaru, was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
Martella was the director of communications for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.
"Scott dedicated his all too brief life to public service and to helping others," Bellone said in a statement Sunday evening of Martella, who also served as Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Suffolk County representative for four years. "He is known across Long Island as a leader and a great man. The hundreds of people Scott has worked with over the years and the thousands of people whose lives he has positively impacted would describe him as nothing short of an amazing person."
Cuomo said on his Twitter account that "Long Island is a better place today because of Scott's service and dedication to the community."
