Northport, NY, November 24, 2014…On Friday, December 19, 2014, St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Northport will open its doors for anyone feeling a special need for comfort during the holiday season. The sanctuary at 270 Main Street will be open starting at 1 PM, and there will be a “Blue Christmas” service at 7 PM.

“We are setting this day aside to minister to anyone whose holidays are clouded by personal loss or distress of any kind, and those who just need a moment to pause during the busy holiday rush,” said Pastor Kristina Hansen, who will lead the 7 PM service. “We keep the front doors open as a way of welcoming those going by to stop in and spend some time in our sanctuary anytime between one o’clock in the afternoon and eight in the evening.” She added, “People may come in feeling ‘blue,’ but they tell us they leave feeling comforted, hopeful, peaceful, and even with a measure of joy.”

Pastor Hansen underscored that the “Blue Christmas” ministry is open to all, not only members of St. Paul’s, and she asks anyone who knows someone who might benefit to encourage him or her to attend. Those who come can spend time in quiet reflection, listen to music, light candles in remembrance loved ones, or talk with volunteers who will be on hand to lend an ear.

According to Pastor Hansen, churches began offering Blue Christmas services approximately ten years ago. The services are traditionally held late in the Advent season to correspond to the longest night of the year.
