Bracing for More Snow

Large piles of snow leftover from the Dec. 26 blizzard can still be found in the parking lots of Northport's waterfront .

"Our highway department has been very busy with, first, the cleaning up of the snow itself and then, second, cleaning snow up and moving the giant piles, " Mayor George Doll said at the Board of Trustees Tuesday night meeting.

Cleanup of the post-Christmas blizzard cost $35,208, according to Mayor George Doll.

"That's sand and salaries," he said at the Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday. "I believe that was just about half of our snow budget for this year.

And now, the National Weather Service says more snow is on the way.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Long Island effective beginning Friday morning through late Friday night. Light snow is forecast for the morning, with heavier snowfall expected late Friday morning and into the evening, possibly impacting the afternoon commute.

There is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations, the weather service warns.

There is also a chance of snow flurries before midnight Thursday and snow is likely Saturday morning before noon.

The forecast high temperature for Friday is 36 degrees, with a low of  approximately 26.
