Centerport Yacht Club To Host 37th Annual Vanderbilt Cup Regatta Honoring Centerport’s Famous Yachtsman

Sailboat Regatta and after-race fund raising party at Vanderbilt Mansion courtyard to feature live music, race awards & raffles!

On Saturday, October 7, Centerport Yacht Club and The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will host the 37th Annual William K. Vanderbilt II Memorial Cup Race in honor of one of Centerport’s most famous resident yachtsmen.

Open to all area sailors, The Vanderbilt Cup was established by Centerport Yacht Club Past Commodore Albert P. Rosanes in 1981 in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Museum. To be eligible to race, a boat must possess a valid Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound (YRALIS) PHRF certificate, a valid one-design certificate, or receive a temporary waiver and handicap rating from the event organizer — for more information, please see the Notice of Race and visit YRALIS PHRF Racing.

The race will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Huntington Bay in the area of Bell “8,” and will finish in Northport Bay with a glorious view of "Eagle's Nest," William K. Vanderbilt II’s stunning Spanish Revival mansion and Gold Coast retreat. Racers and their guests are then invited to the mansion for the Regatta Party to enjoy food, drinks and live music from the Just Cause band under the stars in Vanderbilt's Spanish Courtyard. The Regatta Party, sponsored by AriZona®, will also include raffles with all proceeds to benefit the Vanderbilt Museum, featuring prizes donated by many area businesses.

Family and friends of the racing skippers and crew are encouraged to come to the Vanderbilt Museum early that day to explore this jewel of our community, watch the race finish in Northport Harbor from the lawn, take a Mansion Tour and then join the Regatta Party beginning at 5:00 p.m.

“The Vanderbilt Cup brings sailors from all over Long Island Sound to Centerport to compete in one of the last races of the season and enjoy what may be the most unique regatta party around at the beautiful Vanderbilt mansion,” said Peter A. Hutchison, Centerport Yacht Club Race Committee Chairman. “The funds we raise will help to ensure that The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum can continue to honor Willie K.’s maritime legacy, and keep this unique combination of mansion, marine and natural history museum, planetarium and park dedicated to the education and enjoyment of the people of Long Island and beyond for many years to come.”
