Cops: Woman Injured, 3 Dogs Killed in East Northport Fire

Firefighters and police battled the house fire at about 2:40 p.m.

An East Northport fire injured a 51-year-old woman and killed three dogs Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Suffolk police and East Northport fire fighters responded to a fire at 9 Barnett Place in East Northport at approximately 2:40 p.m. When officers arrived, the rear of the home was fully engulfed. Five of the woman’s dogs were outside the home, but three were still inside. The woman attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose to rescue three dogs that were trapped in the home, police said.

The woman suffered serious burn injuries and was transported by East Northport Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was treated and admitted. The five dogs that were outside the home were transported to a veterinary hospital. The three dogs that were in the home died, officials said.

Second Precinct Police Officers Officers Michael Yonelunas and Stephen Caratozzolo entered the burning home as they tried to locate the trapped dogs. They were unable to find the dogs because of the heavy smoke and heat. Both officers were also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for smoke inhalation where they were treated and released, police said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be non-criminal at this time.
