East Northport Middle School Students Meet Distinguished Author

Students learn about the writing process.

For the past 15 years, the Northport/East Northport Public library has invited middle school students to come and hear a distinguished author speak about the writing process.

This year, Mr. Rozmus and Mrs. Leahy’s eighth-grade students at East Northport Middle School met Author Steven Sheinkin to discuss his writing process and research techniques.

All of the students read at least one of Sheinkin’s books, including “King George, What Was His Problem?” and “Lincoln’s Grave Robbers,” and completed four out of five reflection questions. After the visit, Mrs. Leahy spoke to students about writer’s craft. Students then analyzed the difference between narrative nonfiction and “textbook style” information text.
