Elwood Appoints Assistant Superintendent Of Curriculum And Instruction
Dr. Sonia Hood is set to replace the retiring Dr. Maureen Hull on Jan. 17.

ELWOOD, NY — Dr. Sonia Hood was appointed as the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, the Elwood School District announced. She is set to assume the position on Jan. 17, replacing the retiring Dr. Maureen Hull.
Hood, since 2020, served as the Rockville Centre School District’s K-12 central director of curriculum and instruction. She previously worked for the Hempstead School District for more than two decades as an International Baccalaureate director, assistant principal, curriculum writer, and elementary and middle school math teacher.
“I aspire to support the needs of the whole child by cultivating academic competencies as well as executive functioning skills that fosters independent thought and empowers all learners to reach their full potential,” Hood said in a statement.

Hood is an adjunct professor at Molloy University, where she provides graduate-level instruction to aspiring school building leaders on methodologies of improving instruction, a member of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education and the 2009 winner of Long Island Business News’ 40 Under 40 Award.
She also co-authored the book “More Units of Instruction for Gifted Learners: Grades 2-7,” published in 2007. Hood secured grants to foster development of both literacy and STEM initiatives in partnership with Columbia University.

Hood lives in Baldwin Harbor. She received her bachelor’s degree in social work/psychology from SUNY Albany, her master’s degree in elementary education from Queens College, and her doctorate in instructional leadership from St. John’s University.
“Dr. Hood brings with her 20 years of a proven track record of supervising teams, analyzing data and leading instruction with her vision and passion for excellence,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “She is credited with having an unparalleled impact on the students and adults of the communities she has previously served. We are confident that her leadership will greatly benefit Elwood’s continued pursuit of excellence.”
