Elwood Students Earn Cash Prizes for Foreign Language Exam Success

These select students received exceptional rankings after taking foreign language national exams in March.

A few students at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School and Elwood Middle School have a way with the foreign tongue.

These select students received exceptional rankings after taking the American Association of Teachers of Italian and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese National Exams in March. They were quizzed on listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar.

About 140 schools in over 20 states participated in the exams. The students with the top scored were awarded monetary prizes.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School 10th-grade student Michael Hermanns received first place in the AATI Level III exam and was awarded $250 in cash. Over 1,800 students took the AATI Level III exam.

A few Elwood Middle School students received prizes from competing in Level I.

  • Eighth graders Ivan Andrade and Drew Kuroda received $250 for first place.
  • Emily Amir, Christian Bacelic, Mario Georgiou and Michael Gastello received $200 for second place
  • Makenzy Chaikin received $50 for fifth place.

The following middle and high school students were selected for AATI National Honorable Mention: Karen Avila, Cassidy Evans, Allison Flanagan, Ilissa Pipia, Joseph Salerno, Giovanni Rinaldi and Samantha Rivera.

Four students also earned gold medal certificates in the Level I AATSP national exam by scoring a 95 or higher: Keen Clinton, Jaida Morgan, Meghan Rivardo and Caleb Shim.
