Family Rescued From Long Island Sound Off Northport

A family of four's boat capsized on Monday night, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — A Brentwood family of four was rescued after their boat capsized in the Long Island Sound on Monday night, Suffolk police said.

A 17-year-old called 911 at 8:26 p.m. saying he and his family were on a boat taking on water in the Long Island Sound, off of Northport. The 14-foot skiff fully capsized before police got there, and the family was in the water.

The 17-year-old, Oscar Martinez, used the flashlight on his cellphone to signal to Marine Bureau officers Robert Reed and Robert Mroczkowski onboard Marine Bravo.

Within 10 minutes from first call, Oscar Martinez; Jose Velasquez, 29; Olsin Martinez, 37; and
Emma Martinez, 22; were pulled safely from the water, police said. Only two of the family members were wearing life preservers, according to officials.

Northport Fire Department personnel evaluated the four at the Soundview Boat Ramp, and all declined medical treatment.
