Fifth Avenue Elementary Combines Reading and Creativity With the 'Pumpkin Book Project'

Students in grades K-5 decorated their pumpkins after their favorite book characters.

We've all had to write a book report when we were in school. This year, the Fifth Avenue Elementary school wanted to try something a little different. Rather than write a basic book report, the students were invited to create a pumpkin that reflects the character from a book they read.

This project combined literacy with creativity and an opportunity to practice the election process which is an important lesson as we near Election Day. Students turned their foam pumpkins into everything from Harry Potter to Rainbow Fish. The results are incredible and judging will be difficult. Over 125 pumpkins were submitted for voting.

The pumpkins are on display in the library where students will vote for their favorite character. The pumpkins are displayed anonymously so you do not know who created which pumpkin. One winner will be selected from each grade. All student will receive a participation award and the winners will receive a gift card to Barnes & Noble.

The pumpkins will remain on display for parents to view during our PJ Story Night event on November 7th which kicks off our PARP (Pick A Reading Partner) program. It was fun to see everyone bring their books to life with this project. Congratulations to all who participated and we can't wait to hear who the winners are!
