NORTHPORT, NY — Joanie and Richie, a bonded mother-and-son pair described by volunteers as “some of the most loving, gentle, beautiful cats we have ever had the privilege of rescuing,” are this week’s featured cats through Northport Cat Rescue Association.

“There are some stories that break your heart a little more than others,” the rescue said. “Joanie and Richie’s story is one of them.”

Joanie and Richie, approximately 5 and 6 years old, once lived with a man who rescued and cared for them for most of their lives.

But after their owner died, everything changed.

“Almost overnight, everything they knew disappeared,” the rescue said. “They were put outside… and never allowed back in again.”

Volunteers say the cats stayed close to the home after being forced out.

“They waited on the property day after day, refusing to leave, hoping somehow their dad would come back for them,” the rescue said.

Eventually, the house was scheduled for demolition, and Northport Cat Rescue Association was contacted.

“When someone realized these two broken-hearted cats were still there, we brought them into rescue,” the organization said.

The pair was placed into foster care, where volunteers say they slowly began to heal.

“Little by little, their fear melted away,” the rescue said. “They learned what kindness felt like again.”

The organization believed they were ready to transition into public adoption habitats — but the move proved overwhelming.

“They completely shut down,” the rescue said. “Terrified and overwhelmed, they spiraled into anxiety attacks and could not cope with losing the comfort and security they had finally found again.”

The cats were returned to foster care, where they have remained ever since.

Because they are not housed in a public adoption area, the rescue says few people know they are available.

“That is why we are begging people to please share their story,” the rescue said.

Volunteers describe Joanie as affectionate and deeply people-oriented.

“She is a giant fluffy cloud of love whose favorite place in the world is curled up in the lap of someone she trusts,” the rescue said.

Despite everything she has experienced, the rescue says Joanie remains calm and loving.

“She is patient, maternal, and impossibly sweet,” the organization said. “After everything she has endured, she still chooses love.”

Richie, meanwhile, is described as quieter and more reserved at first.

“He carries his heartbreak a little more quietly,” the rescue said.

But once comfortable, volunteers say his affectionate personality emerges.

“He will follow you everywhere, sit beside you watching the world through the window, and simply enjoy the peace he fought so hard to find again,” the rescue said.

The rescue says the pair’s bond is especially strong.

“Joanie is Richie’s comfort. Richie is Joanie’s heart,” the organization said.

Together, the two have even helped foster kittens entering the home.

“They’ve become surrogate parents to kittens that are not their own, nurturing them with unbelievable gentleness and patience,” the rescue said.

Volunteers say the pair would thrive in a calm and patient home.

“They are not difficult. They are not damaged,” the rescue said. “They are simply waiting for someone who understands that healing hearts sometimes just need time, patience, and unconditional love.”

Joanie and Richie are spayed and neutered, fully vaccinated, litter-box trained, microchipped, and FELV/FIV negative.

Those interested in meeting the pair can complete an application through the Northport Cat Rescue Association website, call 631-606-2631, or email info@northportcatrescue.org.

“Somewhere out there is the person they have been waiting for all along,” the rescue said.
