Maltese-Eliminate localities sales taxes on clothing and shoes

Maryann Maltese, Democratic Candidate for NYS Assembly 12th AD, former Regional Planner for NYS Legislature encourages localities like Suffolk County to eliminate its share of 4.5/8 percent on retail goods immediately. This elimination of the Localities sales taxes on clothing purchases, shoes, items under $110.00 should be exempt from Suffolk County sales taxes.

Many of us are making more online clothing purchases than ever before from out of state regions, and sometimes these Retailers forget to remove NYState Tax Exemptions on these purchases too-I encourage Residents of the 12th AD to keep track of their online purchases as in-store Retailers are mostly in compliance- many of us are home as non-essential workforce, working remotely or our business activities have been reduced due to social distancing mandates, said Maryann Maltese. However-this doesn't change working families with young children's needs to make clothing purchases whether online to in-store-having Suffolk County join forces with NYS is a good common sense measure, said Maryann Maltese.

Maryann Maltese was a Member of the Original Task force team which spearheaded the campaign on eliminating NYS taxes on retail purchases-it began as a 2 week pilot program for back to school shopping, but with economies stagnations at times and the need for help working families-NYS came forward an agreed to eliminate fully it's former percentage of sales taxes collected on these purchases. Clothing, shoes, socks are not luxury items-but essential items-NYS recognized it and we made the difference-now under my Leadership-Suffolk will hear the wake up call, said Maltese.

By Suffolk County joining NYS in our vision of understanding now important implementing the elimination of sales taxes on clothing items was then and is now- what's necessary for working families in the 12th AD, said Maryann Maltese. The original sales exemption on retail of items under $110 was started in NYC-only because NYC and not Suffolk County was willing too join -now more than ever right here in Suffolk County- with COVID negatively impacting families and our economy-it's necessary for Suffolk to be innovative-and by me and all of us administratively encouraging Suffolk to come forward now-supports my long standing support of working families, my role in Education as a Substitute Teacher in Brentwood UFSD and is what is needed in Suffolk, said Maltese

The 12th AD is heavily comprised of Retail-Retail is the lifeblood within the 12th AD-many small mom-pop shops trying to survive in the district and the elimination of Suffolk County's % of sales taxes on retail purchases will spark the local economy, said Maryann Maltese. We also have a number of unique Retail Establishments which sell second hand-or retro clothing items-whereas my community uses for purchases-but these Retailers are also required to collect Suffolk County Sales taxes on retail purchases-disenfranchising the younger shopper or a family experiencing some tough times that live in my district, said Maltese. I'm personally a Retro Girl-I like to frequent second hand establishments or boutiques, and fortunately we have a number of chic retail options; Salvation Army Northport-East Northport, St. Vincent DePaul, Plato's Closet and so many more for you to discover on your own.

Once elected to Albany-I'll introduce the Legislation in Albany encouraging Suffolk County to get on board with NYS's decisions (legislation that I worked on years ago0-and now Suffolk County needs to join forces with NYS by stop taxing retail items. Suffolk County is not the only County still implementing sales taxes on retail purchases-so I encourage these Counties to explore the issue as well and sell if elimination of County sales taxes can be fully eliminated or periodically-it's not up to me-a resident in Suffolk-to tell other Counties how to manage themselves presently-but my recommendation absolutely makes sense in Suffolk-Because our families need it, said Maryann Maltese.

Retail is the most fundamental form of shopping and now that K-12 School Year is about to kick off again-elimination of Suffolk Counties portion taxes on clothing and retail for all is imperative at this point-and is completely pro-active viewpoint.

With the Democratic National Convention in swing and discussions going on about their visions for the Country it is within our Conferences that we came forward and recognized NYS needed to eliminate sales taxes on retail. I recommend-that residents of the 12th AD also send communications to the Conference to send your viewpoints on what matters. I'm committed -once I'm in Albany (support my election challenge) I'll make good on my promise right here-to have Suffolk County eliminate their 4.5/8% sales taxes, said Maryann Maltese.
