Maltese-Suffolk should not be permitted to charge Taxes on Masks

Maryann Maltese, will introduce the bill to require that Suffolk County remove their portion of Sales taxes charged on Cloth Medical Mask purchases. Presently, NYS is not collecting Sales Taxes on Mask purchases-but Suffolk County has not rescinded charging sales taxes of 4/5.8 percent on cloth Masks, said Maltese

As NYS has classified these items as necessary for everyone-any Municipality continuing to change sales tax on these items is unconscionable and should be eliminated immediately. Cloth Masks are not consider a luxury purchase; it's either a required clothing or medical purchase and for these reasons as well-Suffolk County should align with NYS on this matter and rescind the tax.

With reduction in class sizes, need for more school based or center sponsored childcare offerings before and after school child care-will require Students and Staff at the School buildings to have a hefty supply of Masks on site-charging sales taxes for these items-should be eliminated right away, said Maryann. We're 5 months into Pandemic COVID 19 lifestyle and wearing Masks is Statewide required-everyone wants to ensure that Suffolk County isn't pocketing off this at residents expense-it's the right thing to do to stop collecting sales taxes on Medical Masks.

The legislation in question will take into consideration reimbursing consumers for taxes collected between March 7, 2020 until Suffolk County Implements reimbursement practices-hold on to your receipts or keep on top of your credit card purchases of these Mask purchases, said Maltese.
