MARY POPPINS IS COMING TO NORTHPORT!

The NORTHPORT-E. NORTHPORT COMMUNITY THEATER looks forward, with great excitement and anticipation, to our upcoming May production - - MARY POPPINS!

Auditions will be held in early March - - and it’s never too early to select and prepare your audition song! All are invited to come down and audition - - whether you are a seasoned performer or a newcomer to the stage side of the footlights, EVERYONE IS WELCOME from kids of all ages to teens, young adults, adults and seniors! Information on roles follows below - - note that in addition to the cast of named parts, there is also a large ensemble of characters. Spread the word - - come on down and join our theater family!

AUDITION INFO: Tuesday, March 8 - adults only; Wednesday/Thursday, March 9 & 10 - adults & students; all auditions begin at 7:30 p.m.; come prepared to sing 16 measures (please bring sheet music)

Orchestra (we have a full pit) & Crew volunteers can also sign up these nights!

SHOW DATES: May 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 - 2016 (Fridays/Saturdays curtain @ 8; Sunday matinees curtain at 2)

“MARY POPPINS” CHARACTER ROLES AND DESCRIPTIONS:

MARY POPPINS - Female 30-40 yrs old

Jane and Michael Banks’ new nanny, Mary Poppins is extraordinary and can be a little bit strange. Always neat and tidy, Ms. Poppins might be described as somewhat vain (but in the most delightful way). She knows just how she wants things done and can be intimidating with her little-bit-scary yet always exciting demeanor. Practically perfect in every way, Ms. Poppins says what she means and means what she says. Actor should be able to move well.

BERT - Male 30-40 yrs old

The Narrator of the story, Bert is a very good friend of Mary Poppins. Bert might be described as an everyman and counts many talents among his repertoire including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist, and, of course, chimney sweep. He keeps guard over the children and the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. Possessing great charm and appeal with his strong Cockney accent, this role is very much that of a song-and-dance-man.

GEORGE BANKS - Male 40-45 yrs old
Father of Jane and Michael Banks, George is a banker through and through who requires “precision and order” in all aspects of his life, including his home. He is removed from his own children while believing his upbringing (by his own nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew) to have been perfect. Under this strict exterior lies a soft-hearted, sensitive soul.

WINIFRED BANKS - Female 30-40 yrs old
George’s wife and Jane and Michael’s mother, this former actress seems a little off kilter as she struggles to live up to her husband’s expectations of how she should conduct herself as wife and mother. Worried that she might not be up to the role of “The Banker’s Wife,” she overlooks her own gifts of warmth and kindness.

JANE BANKS - Female 11 yrs old
Out-going, high-spirited, and a little snobby, the daughter of the Banks’ household, while bright and precocious, can be a willful handful.

MICHAEL BANKS - Male 9 yrs old

Joining his sister, Jane, in high jinks intended to get their parents’ attention, this bubbly, cheeky young boy can be somewhat naughty. He wishes, always, to be just like his father and in winsome in his excitability.

MRS. BRILL - Female 50-60 yrs old
As housekeeper and cook for the Banks household, Mrs. Brill is both overworked and stressed. With her ongoing complaints of understaffing, Mrs. Brill’s manner fails to cover her warmth and ever-present good humor. Not fond of Mary Poppins.

ROBERTSON AY - Male 20-30 yrs old

Houseboy to the Banks family, he is a fumbling, grumbling lazy fellow without much faith in himself.

BIRD WOMAN - Female 50-60 yrs old

Dressed in an assortment of old shawls with ever-present crumbs for her bird friends filling her pockets, The Bird Woman offers her crumbs for sale to all who pass by. With a roughhewn voice that reflects the harsh state of her life, she is routinely ignored by all.

MISS ANDREW - Female 40-60 yrs old

Mr. Banks’ former nanny, cold and frightening while carrying a brimstone-filled bottle of elixir used to keep naughty children from misbehaving. Miss Andrew is a bully who wants things done according to her rules and her rules only

MRS. CORRY - Female 40-50 yrs old
Mrs. Corry is the owner of a magical gingerbread shop. Of unknown age, she speaks with a Caribbean accent.

ADMIRAL BOOM - Male 50-60 yrs old
This large, loud man whose voice booms in Navy jargon is a neighbor of the Banks family and has a softspot in his heart for Miss Lark.

MISS LARK - Female 30-40 yrs old
Owner of a dog, Willoughby, who is in all ways a child to her, the haughty Miss Lark lives next door to the Banks family.

PARK KEEPER - Male 40-60 yrs old
While ensuring that park rules are followed to the very letter, the officious Park Keeper secretly hankers after his own youth .

POLICEMAN - Male 30-50 yrs old
Greatly respected, the Policeman knows quite a lot about all the houses on his beat.

NELEUS - Male 16-20 yrs old
Missing his own father, Poseidon, this statue of a young boy posed with a dolphin in the park is named Neleus. Neleus misses his father.

JOHN NORTHBROOK - Male 30-50 yrs old
Speaking with a Northern England accent (nowt, owt, summat), John Northbrook is an honest businessman who needs a loan from the bank to build a factory for his community.

VON HUSSLER - Male 30-50 yrs old
Speaking with a German accent, Von Hussler is a dishonest character who is seeking a loan from the bank for a shady business.

BANK CHAIRMAN - Male 50-60 yrs old

Conceited and disdainful with an old-fashioned manner, the Chairman is the head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed.

KATIE NANNA - Female 20-30 yrs old

Jane and Michael’s nanny at the beginning of the show, she is over her head and ready to leave the Banks household behind..

MISS SMYTHE - Female 40-50 yrs old
The Bank Chairman’s secretary, dry and without humor.

QUEEN VICTORIA - Female 40-60 yrs old
A statue in the park.
