Missing: East Northport Therapy Dog

A lost Border Collie, Shadow has been missing since Sept. 4.

Shadow, a Border Collie, has been missing since Sept. 4.

“He is a certified therapy dog who volunteers at Hospice House on Laurel Rd in East Northport [through Visiting Nurses], and in Nesconset and Hauppauge libraries letting children read to him,” said Maria Lubarsky, adding that her mother is Shadow’s handler at these volunteer opportunities.

Lubarsky said her mother was heading to Hospice House, and stopped by a friend’s house in Huntington, where the dog bolted.

“Many people have spotted Shadow, but Shadow will not let anyone catch him,” Lubarsky said. “He is 10 years old, but is still very fast. He has been spotted under bushes and in people’s backyards.”

“We need help,” she added. “All we need is someone to call us at 631-245-5963 or 631-245-4718 if they see him. Don’t try to catch him, or he’ll run. He loves tennis balls. He’s probably hunger. He has never bitten anyone, but I think he is afraid.”

Lubarsky said she’s conducted research so she can best help Shadow.

“A lost Border Collie will appear thin, homeless and abused. People may be afraid to approach him. Shadow is a trained therapy dog who is trusted in libraries with little children, but the research says he may not even recognize us by sight or sound anymore. After being on his own 26 days, he may only recognize his family by scent, which means we need to get close to him to catch him.”

Shadow sightings include: Maplewood/Bennett/Lodge, Lake/Ganna/E Rogues, at the Carrillon Nursing Home, at Hecksher Park on Rt 25 and Prime, at Greenlawn Rd and Red Deer Place, and on Trafalgar Court.
