No Mercury Vapors In Northport Middle School's Air: District
An environmental firm tested the air after high levels of mercury were found in a cesspool just outside the building.

NORTHPORT, NY — No detectable levels of mercury vapor were found in the air of Northport Middle School, an environmental firm's tests showed, according to the Northport-East Northport School District. Robert Banzer, superintendent of the district, told parents in a letter that he received verbal confirmation from PW Grosser Consulting.
Elevated levels of mercury were found in a cesspool area outside the building, next to a classroom, Banzer told parents Monday. Three classrooms nearby were tested, as were a science prep room and hallway outside the rooms.
Mercury was found in the soil at the bottom of the cesspool, about 10 feet below ground level. The environmental consultant is working on a remediation plan that will involve the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Banzer said.
