NORTHPORT, NY — Costello, a 6-year-old cat, is the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Pet of the Week. He has been with the rescue for two years.

"Costello is FIV positive but please keep reading though," Lora Wild, a volunteer with the cat rescue, wrote. "Don’t turn your back on this deserving sweetheart. He is healthy and happy and strong. FIV can only be transmitted to other felines, thru a deep bite wound or mommy cat to kitten occasionally when they nurse."

Costello was rescued when he lived outside the home of a lady who fed him. She died, and her neighbors felt bad for Costello and contacted the cat rescue. That was two years ago.

"Costello is sweet, docile and friends with everyone," Wild said. "He is currently being fostered with other kittens and cats and even has a girlfriend in foster care named Oreo that he is always found laying next to. They all love him. Costello can not go into our habitats in our stores for exposure to the public because he gets very scared and stressed. So he has been in foster care for quite a while."

Wild believes the public has a perception that a cat is safe and sound in foster care and the cat finding its forever home may not be urgent.

"This is not the case," Wild said. "Costello is smart. Since he is fostered with other cats and kittens that move on so frequently, he does get confused. He is also craving attention. The minute someone walks into the room, he wants a warm lap to lay on or next to. He watches out the window all day long and gets so excited to see people come home. However, being in foster care with many others, sometimes means he gets pushed to the back of the line in terms of affection. He never gets mad. He graciously will take the few moments of affection from anyone that gives it to him. He would be a great companion for anyone looking for a best buddy."

He loves other friendly cats, according to Wild. He will purr the minute he gets pet, lovingly staring up into a person's eyes while he sits on their lap.

"He is a perfect gentleman," Wild said. "Loves his girlfriend Oreo in foster care with him. We wonder sometimes if he knows she will probably get adopted soon, before him, leaving Costello behind again. To meet him is to love him. He is a big mush. He needs stability. He needs a home. His home. Please consider this boy with his huge heart. You will never regret it."
