Northport Adoptable Pets Of The Week: Cosmo And Comet

Cosmo and Comet are disabled, but they don't act like it, as they are thriving. Here is how you can adopt them.

NORTHPORT, NY — Cosmo (left) and Comet, 5-month-old siblings, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Kittens of the Week. They are disabled, but they sure don't act like it.

A woman called the NCRA to report five kittens in a neighbor's yard. The woman told the rescue that two of the kittens were missing limbs. NCRA directors went to the home and brought the five kittens back to their rescue cottage.

Comet, the little boy, was missing one rear leg and his sister, Cosmo, was missing both rear legs.

"It was quite a sight, but what was most amazing, was how well Comet and Cosmo were able to get around and keep up with the antics of their silly siblings," Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue, wrote in a statement.

A veterinarian determined that Cosmo and Comet were born with the condition.

Both of them thrived with the rest of their siblings, though Cosmo needed access to carpeting at times to recharge since running around on a hardwood floor without two rear legs would bother her after a bit, according to Wild.

The siblings were split up, with three of them going to a foster home before they were adopted into loving homes.

Comet and Cosmo went to foster mother Lisa Hausch and her doting family and their family cats. Rauch's room has wall-to-wall carpeting, which gave Cosmo more confidence.

"We could never have imagined how amazing these 2 would end up," Wild said. "Nothing stops them. The word disabled is barely mentioned when we describe these 2, mostly because they don’t realize they are. Comet can run circles around any 4-legged cat. He hasn’t let his disability slow him down one bit. He is a toy hog, demanding attention and whatever you or anyone is playing with, he wants it. He loves to run and gets the zoomies for no reason at all except to be silly. He loves to snuggle in your lap or sit on your chest or even up on your shoulder for attention."

He also loves meal time, as evidenced by his running over to anyone who says "who's hungry?"

One of Comet’s favorite treats is a dollop of whipped cream as he comes barreling in at the sound of it being dispensed, Wild said.

Cosmo is a very special little girl, Wild said. In her first foster home with all of her siblings, she would sit on a pillow and watch her siblings' wrestling matches.

"When she and Comet went to Foster Lisa’s home, it was immediately observed how much more active she was able to be on the cushioned carpeting," Wild said. "Suddenly she became a little, fierce wrestler. She started to play, chasing everything and anything, her 2 favorites being a laser and….her tail."

Cosmo has learned to use her voice to communicate, showcasing her intelligence. She is clearly not in pain on a daily basis, Wild said. She is a snuggle bunny, whether it's with her foster humans in their beds or on the couch with her brother and foster cats everywhere else. Give her a soft cozy cushion and she is in heaven, Wild said.

"What do Cosmo and Comet need? A home. A family that can be attentive to their needs. Watching out if Cosmo is doing too much, because she can get sore. She needs someone to set limits at times, because she feels she has none. Comet and Cosmo love to wrestle. Every once in a while, their wrestling matches may have to be broken up, because Cosmo will never give up. They need a home that has at least a room or two with carpeting, lets call it a safe zone, so that they can rest their limbs on padding if need be. They need a family that will not remind them of their disabilities but rather love them for all that they are. Cheer them on, hold them to a standard that almost any pet should be, and care for them in times of need. In return, you will receive the most rewarding and unconditional love you could ever imagine."

Wild said the two kittens truly need each other, as they are very bonded.

"When Cosmo meows, Comet comes running, not even realizing he too has a disability, but instead, just taking on the protective brother role, looking after his sister. They adore each other."

Neither have any issues with the litter box, Wild said. They use a normal-size one. Both have strong appetites. They are both FIV/FELV negative, spayed and neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

"You will be amazed every single day by these 2 affectionate lovebugs. They will inspire you and teach you to never give up. They are this rescue's heroes. They have found the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. Our rescue believed in these 2 from day one and are rooting for the most amazing happily ever after. Comet and Cosmo will show you that nothing is impossible."
