NORTHPORT, NY — Petunia and Lulu, two cats around 13 years old, were once rescued from near-death as kittens. They'll need another rescue, as the two felines had to leave their long-time home on Monday, according to Lora Wild, a volunteer with the Northport Cat Rescue Association.

"Rebecca, their sole family member they have left must leave the only home these beautiful girls have ever known and cannot take Petunia and Lulu with her," Wild wrote in an email. "As the day arrives, Rebecca says she sees a change in the cats, getting a bit stressed watching her as she packs, as if they know. Anyone who has pets understands this. We were so hoping to find them a home before Rebecca had to move."

Rebecca's mom died of COVID-19 a few months ago. Rebecca's dad died a few years ago. The family had Petunia and Lulu for years, according to Wild.

When Petunia and Lulu were just kittens, roughly 13 years ago, they were in the hands of a high kill shelter, Wild said. A young lady was interning, and it was her first day on the job. Her first duty was to euthanize Petunia and Lulu because the shelter was full. Instead, she snuck Petunia and Lulu into her sweater pockets, ran out, and never went back. Because her mom was allergic, she brought them to the home of Rebecca and her mom. They fell in love and adopted the then-kittens into their family.

The cats remained with the family until Rebecca's mom died.

"Rebecca is barely an adult herself and has been given the unimaginable task of packing up her family home and having to rehome her loyal cats she has had all their lives," Wild said. "She was able to find homes for 3."

She had turned to Northport Cat Rescue Association for help.

"As anyone could imagine [Rebecca] does not want to see them in a cage," Wild said. "These beautiful girls were given a miracle when they started out in life. We are hoping for another one so they can relax and be safe yet again."

Petunia and Lulu are extremely bonded, healthy, sweet and loving, according to Wild. They get along with other cats, love to be pet and sleep by the side of their owners. Lulu loves to nuzzle in people's necks and watch TV or take a nap, while Petunia is a kind soul.

"Both cats are going to miss Rebecca so much, and we are worried about them," Wild said. "Although NCRA will make sure they are safe and loved until someone finally adopts them, because they are senior cats, we hope it won’t take too long. We just know there is someone out there willing to help them.

"If you have room in your family and in your heart for these 2 easygoing beauties, know that not only would you be rescuing Petunia and Lulu, but you would also be helping a brave young lady sleep a little more peacefully at night knowing her girls are safe and loved. COVID has caused so many unhappy situations, wouldn’t it be wonderful to change the ending of this story?"

Petunia and Lulu are spayed, have all their shots, are litter box-trained, and micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
