Northport HS Senior To Take American Invitational Mathematics Exam
The student earned the right to take the test based on his top 5% national performance on the American Mathematics Competition (AMC 12).

NORTHPORT, NY — Northport High School senior Luke Tuthill qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME), the school district announced. He earned the opportunity to take the test based on his top 5% national performance on the American Mathematics Competition (AMC 12).
The AIME was designed to be challenging for even the most exceptional math students. While all honors level high school math students are invited to take either the AMC 10 or AMC 12, it is a "remarkable accomplishment" to qualify for the AIME, according to the district. The AIME is a 15-question, three-hour exam which can be solved using pre-calculus. Students are not allowed to use a calculator.
"We are so thrilled for Luke and so very proud of him," said the district's chairperson for mathematics Robin Rann. "Qualifying for the AIME is beyond noteworthy; it is a true triumph! Luke’s exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking skills led to this opportunity and will also pave the way for his future success."
