Northport Police Blotter: Man Nearly Scammed Out Of Thousands

ALSO: A woman reported an identity theft, and a man might have pretended to shoot Christmas bows at passing cars, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 22 through Jan. 28.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A man walked into police headquarters on Jan. 23 to report a phone scam. The man said he contacted Optimum for connection issues and they put him in touch with Chase Bank, which then instructed him to take $8,500 cash out of his account. The man took the cash out of his account and shortly after became skeptical of the caller after he was asked to go to Home Depot with the cash. The man went to the station while still on the phone with the scam caller. An officer attempted to talk to the scammer who would not answer any of the questions. The call was ended and the officer told the man to block the number. Police brought the man to Chase so his cash could be deposited back into his account. The bank employees were made aware of the incident and helped the man make his deposit. He lost no money as of Jan. 23.
  • A deer was fatally struck by a car on Eatons Neck Road on Jan. 23. The car left by the time police arrived.
  • A woman went to police headquarters on Jan. 23 to report an identity theft. The woman said a website was created using her name and work history. She contacted her employer's security department regarding the incident and was advised by them to file a local police report. The woman was told to freeze her credit and monitor her bank accounts for any unauthorized use.
  • A woman was asking for money in a parking lot on Fort Salonga Road on Jan. 24. The woman refused to give police information, police said. Police told her to stop and leave the area.
  • An oven caught fire on Scudder Avenue on Jan. 24. The Northport Fire Department extinguished it and ventilated the house. The fire was contained to inside the oven.
  • A dog got loose on Woodside Avenue on Jan. 25 but reunited with its owner by the time police arrived.
  • A vehicle was towed for parking illegally on Fort Salonga Road on Jan. 27.
  • An elderly woman was having a cardiac emergency in a business parking lot on Jan. 28. Northport Rescue brought her to Huntington Hospital.
  • Police were called to Main Street on Jan. 28 for a report of a man in a red coat pretending to shoot Christmas bows at passing cars. The man left before police arrived.
