Northport Receives $5M in Funding to Fix Sewer Mains

The grant will fix the Depression-era sewer mains that are in desperate need of replacement.

The Village of Northport recently secured a $5 million state grant that would replace two sewer mains that are deteriorating, leaking and must be replaced at no additional cost to taxpayers.

The necessary work will also reduce nitrogen levels and protect the environment in and around the sewer mains, which are located on the Northport Harbor’s bed (the Shoreline Sewer) and on the edge of the hillside above it (the Woodbine Force Main).

Northport Village Mayor George Doll said these improvements are long overdue. “Reliable and safe infrastructure and clean, safe water are the foundation for a strong economy and healthy community,” he said in a statement.

The funding was secured by Sen. John J. Flanagan and Sen. Carl L. Marcellino.

“Sewers are the hidden impediment to economic revitalization and crucial to protecting our environment,” Marcellino said in a press release. “The benefits from this grant are twofold. In the short term, we’re addressing issues of public safety and quality of life, but in the long term this sewer project will go a long way toward improving the economic viability of the Northport community and protecting Northport Harbor. A break in this system would have resulted in roadway destabilization and runoff into Northport Harbor and the Long Island Sound.”

The Village would have had to pay for the entire cost of the project at significant additional cost to local taxpayers without these funds.
