NORTHPORT, NY — Luke Cacic, a senior at Northport High School, recently won the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation student essay competition, the school district announced Friday.
Cacic was the lone winner of the foundation’s high school scholarship, winning the grand prize of $2,000. He was also invited to attend the Victims of Communism Triumph of Liberty Conference and gala dinner, that was held Nov. 8 at Union Station in Washington, D.C.
To win the scholarship, Cacic wrote a superior essay on the existence of the Berlin Wall and the ills of communism. His essay evaluated former president Ronald Reagan’s first impression of the Berlin Wall, where he said, "It’s as ugly as the idea behind it."
