Updated: Northport's Ian Dickson Drafted By Chicago Cubs

Pitcher out of Lafayette College selected in 35th round.

Northport’s Ian Dickson spent the better part of eight hours on Tuesday listening to the Major League Baseball draft to see if his name would be mentioned amongst the thousands selected this year.

The hours went by and it was Wednesday before he knew it.

“Nothing happened,” his father Russell Dickson said. “He was tapped out and went on with his normal day.”

Dickson, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, listened again Wednesday and heard exactly what he hoped for. His named was read when the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 35th round, 1,059 overall, in the First-Year Player’s Draft out of Lafayette College.

“We’re just very excited,” Russell said via phone Wednesday evening. “We were hopeful he’d get drafted. We always liked the Cubs, but we love them more now.”

The Cubs have between now and August 15 to sign Dickson, who did not immediately return a call seeking comment about his recent fortune.

Dickson, a junior, graduated from in 2008 and headed to Lafayette, where he recorded 40 strikeouts in 45 innings. He was injured for the 2011 season and has a 1-4 career record with three saves and a 7.00 ERA.

According to Lafayette, he was originally scheduled to pitch for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League – a Major League sanctioned collegiate summer league – but will not play because of the injury.

He is the first Lafayette player to be drafted since Jeff Antolick was taken by the Yankees in 1992. Dickson also joins a talented list of players with Long Island connections to be drafted this week. To see a complete list, look at the chart below …
