NYS Disability Property Tax Exemptions not applicable-Huntington

NYS provides those where are Disabled with Property Tax Exemption on their Primary Property, said Maryann Maltese.

One needs to meet eligibility requirements of having or being born with a Disability and annual income limits between $3,000-$29,000. Localities, Like Huntington Township, as the Facilitator could if they choose too, offer Exemptions of persons with disabilities on a sliding scale basis option if their incomes are as high as $37,3999.99 and can demonstrate a spend down of such expenses. Presently-Huntington Township is not participating in such options to distribute Property Tax exemptions provided by New York State-that is outrageous.

Once I'm in Albany-I'll introduce the legislation to ensure that Huntington Township is required to provide this Property Tax Exemption as they are only the Facilitator and it ultimately is up to NYS to decide-not Huntington. I'll be the voice for the disabled-as a Former Communications Manager for the NYS Legislature who went back to duty after my own accident in 2008.

This Property Tax season-I met the two most significant legal prongs that NYS believes is important to demonstrate, but after a Hearing at Huntington-the Committee determined that I was ineligible for the Disability Property Tax Exemption, said Maryann Maltese. NYS permits Counties and municipalities to determine how they chose to approve primary homeowners in Huntington who receives the exemption and who does not. Was it arbitrary? I believe the decision this tax season is uncalled for by Huntington Township and NYS legislative Measures need to be introduced to require that Huntington be mandated to include those of us who are disabled and meet Statewide Income Levels to receive and apply the exemption to the Property.

In Huntington, the Township sees the State Property Exemption as being applied to the Block and Lot, other Counties see the Disability Parking Exemption as floating with the Person. The parameters of the Disability Property Exemption is based on earned income-not assets. That is the intent of NYS Rules in applying the Exemption to assist those of us who live on limited incomes-but what's occurred as Huntington is they're deciding whom meets outdated guidelines. I'm the owner of my home in Huntington-I'm disabled and meet income requirements this tax season. Many of us who are disabled, or seniors, or veterans do- add in those of negatively impacted by COVID 19 and not earning income-places us as eligible this year. This is a problem that Huntington Township needs to stop being LAZY-stop balancing the Budget on the poorest of poor-not to make arbitrary policy decisions generally speaking-and approve Primary Owners Applications.

In 2007, Maryann Maltese was a pedestrian in a Shopping Center who was hit from behind-knocking her down-crushing her legs which required internal artificial rods/permanent cast inside to support her mobility-this is permanent. It took 1.5 years to fully rehabilitate my legs; but, as I have artificial aspects in my legs-I have the disability classification. In 2008-Maryann returned to work with the NYS Legislature and carried on her mission-to help those with Special need based issues to live independently.

One who is has a physical disability or neurological disability does not always use a Walker or a Cane to demonstrate such. Like a Bridge-I have the same material inside-and I feel the rods every day-I don't make it a point to cry about it-I chose to be proactive (FDR Democrat-right here in East Northport-anyone visit Teddy's House in Oyster Bay?) and live an active lifestyle. With my condition-it is recommended to keep in motion-so that blood flows throughout my body. In 2007-I left the hospital with internal wounds-where you can not see the disability doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The car accident left a whole inside one leg and multiple miniature fractures throughout the other which needed to close grow bone marrow and mend for a long time- months of rehabilitation took place right here in East Northport-back then Kick Boxing or high impact cycling was not an option. Since then-I challenged myself within my physical capability-but mentally this lady right here is the Female FDR, said Maryann.

In 2008; I returned to work with the NYS Legislature and the usage of Huntington Hangtag was needed every day and I have a Permanent Disability Status going forward-those of us who do-we understand what it means to step it up-yes?! Please comment. Sometimes I use my parking pass-most of the time I don't-it's my option forever. I challenge myself this way to take a few extra steps or during icy season to park closer when needed. There's no unethical aspects here in issuing me my rightful Disability Property Exemption-Huntington Township because I meet the "earning requirements this year". Next year might be something different- and one must submit qualifying proof income-which I accept-but doesn't give the Township of Huntington permission to deny me or anyone else who meets the two Prongs-issuance of Disability Property Tax Exemptions this tax year.
