Police Log: Man Groping Women at Bar, Online Relationship Leads to Near $50K Scam

Monday, Jan. 23
At 12:48 p.m., police received a report of a large tree that fell down and caused damage to three vehicles in a municipal lot on Main Street.

At 6:18 p.m., police responded to a report of two intoxicated women in a car on Constitution Square. Officers found the women in the car with the keys not in the ignition and they appeared to be intoxicated. A relative responded to the scene and drove both women home.

At 2:45 p.m., a woman responded to police headquarters to report an attempted scam. The woman told police she recently started an online relationship with a person she believed was a military officer on deployment in Afghanistan. After a few weeks of responding with him online, the man advised the woman he will send her $1,000,000 by parcel and requests she secure it for him until he arrives back in the United States. The man also requested that she pay him $50,000 for the shipping fee by making a direct payment into a Chase Bank account. The woman immediately became suspicious and stopped all communication with the man. The police report was filed for informational purposes only.
At 8:26 p.m., police responded to a report of a man yelling on Soper Avenue. Police determined the man was inside his vehicle talking loudly on his phone.
Friday, Jan. 27
At 2 p.m., police and the Northport Fire Department responded to a Main Street location for the possible smell of gas. The smell was determined to be an odor from the copier machine.
Saturday, Jan. 28
At 2:54 a.m., a 28-year-old Northport man was seen yelling and cursing in the middle of the street on Fort Salonga Road and he proceeded to throw a glass bottle at two marked police vehicles while officers were inside the vehicles in the parking lot of Mobil gas station on Fort Salonga Road. The officer attempted to stop the man, but the man ran and jumped over the fence in the rear yard of Lorraine Court and then attempted to jump another fence but was apprehended by the officers. The man resisted arrest by flailing his arms and refusing to place his arms behind his back. The man damaged the fence while resisting arrest on Lorraine Court. He was arrested and charged with littering in a public place, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and was taken back to police headquarters for processing.
At 2:49 p.m., police responded to a report of a car lockout due to an electrical malfunction at the funeral home on Laurel Avenue. The doors were not able to be opened.
At 6:12 p.m., police responded to a Fox Lane location for a report of a man who possibly overdosed. Northport Rescue arrived and transported the man to Huntington Hospital.
Sunday, Jan. 29
At 1:32 a.m., police received a report of a man touching women inappropriately in Gunthers Tap Room on Main Street. Officers arrived but could not locate a man matching the description. The woman told police she may come to headquarters the next day to file a report.
