Police: Man Killed in Weather-Related Crash on LIE

Jeep bursts into flames in two-car crash Wednesday morning, police say.

A man was killed on the Long Island Expressway Wednesday morning in a fiery crash that police say appears to be weather-related.

According to police, the man was driving a Jeep Liberty west on the LIE near exit 49 in Melville when he lost control of the vehicle at about 5 a.m.

The Jeep was struck from behind by a tractor trailer and the Jeep then struck the cement center divider and became fully engulfed in flames, police said.

The Jeep’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s name is being withheld pending positive identification by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Joseph Bonilla Jr., 52, of Central Islip, the driver of the tractor trailer, suffered minor injuries. The tractor trailer was carrying waste oil and owned by JVB Transport.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
