Darin Parker, owner of Main Street Cafe, said her restaurant was Zagat-rated last year, though she doesn't know anything about the process. "It's been intermittent," Parker said. "Years ago, it was pretty steady, but truthfully I didn't pay a lot of attention to it. It looks like somebody over there dropped the ball."

Restaurants are chosen for inclusion into guides through a three-step process, according to Zagat. Consumers share their opinions through "featured surveys" on its website. The featured surveys close over a period of time, then Zagat uses the results of these surveys to create ratings and reviews which are then published online and in Zagat guides.
Kehoe also noted in his letter that five Northport restaurants with outdoor dining – , , , and – included in the 2012-13 guide, were not listed as such.
Zagat has not yet returned a request for comment.
