Who hasn’t wanted to read someone else’s mail?

Mail from celebrities, presidents, war heroes, criminals and just plain folks with something to say are the stuff of “We’ve Got Mail!,” a presentation of Rambling Reader Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 15 in the Joshua Hartt Room of First Presbyterian Church of Northport.

We’ve Got Mail! collects some of Long Island’s most experienced actors and sets them to work interpreting correspondence by John and Abagail Adams, Groucho Marx, Emily Dickinson, Kurt Vonnegut, and many more.

“We can’t prove it, but we believe there have been more letters written than novels, short stories and essays combined,” says Dennis Hartin, a member of Rambling Reader Theatre, “And they are usually more accessible and more personal than ‘literary’ writing.”

“Much of our show is famous writers writing with their guard down, something they never thought would be seen by the public,” adds Robert C. Wheeler, a member of Rambling Reader Theatre. “And the rest of it is wonderful writing by people you’ve never heard of.”

The pieces selected for reading include love letters, rejection letters, letters to the editor, letters from members of the armed forces from the battlefield, complaint letters and re by turns funny, reflective, and joyous. “The real stars of the show are the writers,” says Hartin, “As actors, it’s our chance to pick our own material and create a performance that’s true to the text.”

First Presbyterian Church of Northport is at the corner of Church and Main Streets, Northport. Admission to We’ve Got Mail! is free. “And,” adds Wheeler, “unlike the Post Office, you can get your mail without standing in line.”
