Sentence Delayed For LI Man Convicted In $600M Scheme: Report
He ran a medical billing company from his basement and was convicted of health care fraud, wire fraud and identity theft, officials say.
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — The sentencing of an East Northport man convicted of health care fraud, wire fraud and identity theft in a $600 million scheme to defraud insurance companies was delayed from Tuesday until Jan. 31 after his attorney objected to a federal judge adding two years to his sentence, Newsday reported. James ran Leale Inc., a medical billing company, out of his basement.
Prosecutors reminded U.S. District Court Judge Joanna Seybert that Matthew James, 56, could be eligible for a federal program that would allow for a sentence reduction if given 10 years, so she changed his sentence to 12 years, prompting an objection from James's lawyer, Newsday reported.
