Army Corps Approves Asharoken Sea Wall Repairs

The Army Corps of Engineers has approved plans to repair the which was damaged during Hurricane Irene and to supplant steel for the timber posts that had become like projectiles during past storms.

Ashroken Mayor Patricia Irving, in June, announced the plans in concert with Congressman Steve Israel, D-Huntington, on Monday. The project will be 100 percent federally funded, according to Rep. Israel, with $516,500 approved by the Army Corps.

Mayor Pat Irving of Asharoken said, “In spite of the unrelenting pressure on me to remove the damaged wood caps, I was confident that in time, with the help of Congressman Israel, the Army Corps would accept the responsibility and agree to re-design this deficiency on the sea wall. I thank Congressman Israel for his assistance, the Army Corps for their cooperation and the residents of Asharoken and Eaton's Neck for their patience.”

In 1998, an artificial dune was built in the Village of Asharoken to hold back Long Island Sound storm waves from closing Asharoken Avenue. This is the only access point and evacuation route for the residents of Asharoken and Eaton’s Neck, including the . The dune was repaired by the Corps in 2008 and 2010 after bad storms. The caps are critical as they support the artificial dune and must be secure to ensure the safety of residents and travelers.

The Army Corps estimates that the project will be completed in November.
