Suffolk County Cooling Centers to Open Thursday

National Weather Service forecasting high temperatures, residents warned to take precautions.

With the National Weather Service forecasting high temperatures near 100 degrees this week, cooling centers will be open in Suffolk County Thursday. 

The centers will be available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for county residents. Each will be staffed with Suffolk County fire, rescue and emergency service personnel, American Red Cross staff and community emergency response team volunteers.

  • Brookhaven Gym at Suffolk Community College SCCC Ammerman Campus, 533 College Rd., Selden.
  • Health Sports and Education Center at SCCC Grant Campus, 1001 Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood. 
  • Peconic Building SCCC East Campus, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Rd., Riverhead.

In addition, volunteer CERT members will reach out to 600 residents who are on Suffolk County’s Joint Emergency Evacuation Plan call list, according to County Executive Steve Bellone. The list consists of elderly residents living at home who are in need of a little extra care. CERT members will reach out to ascertain how they are doing and provide tips on staying cool.
