Suffolk Marine Bureau Officers Rescue 8 People from Sinking Boat

Incident occurred early Saturday morning in the Great South Bay.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued eight people from a sinking boat in the Great South Bay early Saturday, police said.

Marine Bureau officers John Mullins and Donald Moore were on board Marine X-Ray at 2:22 a.m. when they came across a 32-foot Carrera boat taking on water after both engines failed, police said.

The boat was a third of a mile north of Ocean Beach at the time, police said.

The officers tied up the boat, which was occupied by eight adults, to their vessel and towed it back to Ocean Beach. The officers helped remove water from the boat, police said. 

The operator of the boat, Paul Collins, 23, of East Islip, was issued summonses for an unregistered boat and non-functional navigation lights.
