Survey Says: Area Minority, General Populations Increased
Data also notes increase in family size.

A report released Tuesday reveals changes not only in Northport and East Northport's minority populations, but also the percentages of males vs. females and household size since 2000.
The American Community Survey, which uses information from the U.S. Census Bureau, sifted through five years of data from 2005-2009
The full 2010 Census will be released Dec. 21.
East Northport
The total population of East Northport has gone from 20,845 to 22,383. The percentage of males has risen from 49.4 in 2000, or 10,291, to 52.2, or 11,684 in 2009. Conversely, the percentage of females has dropped from 50.6, or 10,554, to 47.8, or 10,669.
The household size in East Northport increased from 2.9 people to 3.2. The family size increased as well from 3.24 people to 3.57. The total housing units decreased from 7,086 to 6,932 but the percentage of owner-occupied housing units, which went from 5,950 or 85.4 percent, to 5,909, or 87.3 percent.
Th Hispanic population increased from 814 people to 867 but the percentage stayed the same at 3.9 percent.
The African-American population also increased, from 189 people to 259. That percentage saw an increase from 0.9 to 1.2.
Conversely, the Asian population decreased severely from 475 people or 2.3 of the population to 275 persons or 1.2 percent of the population.
Northport
In Northport Village, the total population increased from 7,606 to 7,727 but the number of housing units decreased from 3,052 to 2,952, with 76.8, or 2,814, of those being owner occupied. That is a slight increase over 2000 when 76.3, or 2,253 of households were owner-occupied.
The average household and family sizes increased, as well. The average household size in 2000 was 2.55 people. That increased to 2.75 people. The average family size was 3.07 people. That increased to 3.34 people. The male population saw a slight decrease from 48.6 to 48.1.
The population of African Americans in Northport Village decreased from 45 people, or 0.6 percent of the population to zero.
The Hispanic population saw in increase. In 2000 the number of Hispanics who lived in Northport Village was 159 people or 2.1 percent of the population. In 2009 it was 240 people or 3.1 percent of the population.
The Asian population saw a significant increase in Northport Village going from 95 people or 1.2 percent of the population to 255 people or 3.3 percent of the population.
