Tommy, Abandoned But Still Loving, Seeks Home: Northport Kitty Of The Week

The 3-year-old cat is waiting at Petco Huntington for someone willing to see past his FIV-positive diagnosis, volunteers said.

EAST NORTHPORT, NY — Tommy, a 3-year-old cat who was abandoned but still has “never stopped trusting people,” is Northport Cat Rescue Association’s Kitty of the Week.

“Tommy doesn’t understand what he did wrong,” the rescue said.

Tommy once belonged to someone. He knew the comfort of a home, the kindness of human hands and what it felt like to be loved, according to NCRA. Then one day, that life disappeared.

Abandoned and left to fend for himself, Tommy found his way to an outdoor cat colony.

While many stray cats keep their distance from people, Tommy did the opposite, the rescue said. He sought attention, rubbing against anyone who would stop long enough to acknowledge him.

“It was obvious he wasn’t meant to survive on the streets,” said volunteer Lora Wild.

A compassionate colony feeder quickly realized Tommy did not belong outside and contacted Northport Cat Rescue Association for help.

Now safe, Tommy has shown volunteers exactly who he is; a cat whose heart has remained open, even after being abandoned.

“Tommy is the definition of a love bug,” the rescue said.

He adores everyone he meets, gets along well with other cats and hates being alone, according to NCRA.

Volunteers say it is nearly impossible to take a good photo of him because the moment someone kneels down, Tommy is already rubbing against their legs, climbing into their lap or reaching for affection.

“If you’re looking for a cat who will greet you at the door, curl up beside you on the couch, and remind you every day how grateful he is simply to have someone to love, Tommy is your boy,” the rescue said.

His favorite things are simple: people, food, more people and more food.

Tommy is FIV-positive, but NCRA said that should not be the reason he spends another day without a family.

FIV affects only cats and cannot be transmitted to people or dogs, the rescue said. It is difficult for cats to pass to one another and is typically transmitted through a deep bite wound, or less commonly from a mother cat to her kittens while nursing.

It is not spread by sharing food bowls, water dishes, litter boxes, cuddling or friendly play, according to NCRA. Cats with FIV can often live long, healthy and happy lives with little or no difference from other cats, the rescue said.

Right now, Tommy spends his days at Petco Huntington, watching families walk by.

“Every time someone stops, he hopes this might finally be the person who sees past the cage,” NCRA said. “The person who chooses him. The person who promises he’ll never have to wonder where home is again.”

After everything he has been through, volunteers say Tommy still believes people are worth loving.

Northport Cat Rescue Association hopes someone will prove him right.

Tommy is neutered, fully vaccinated, litter box trained, microchipped, and has tested negative for FeLV and positive for FIV.
