Veterans Day tomorrow-Filed Property Tax Exemptions?

Maryann Maltese, Real Estate Associate-Former NYS Regional Communications-Legislative Manager for NYS Legislature reminds homeowners and Cooperative Share Holders who may or may not be veterans-did you apply for your Veterans Property Tax Exemptions? Did you know that a homeowner might be eligible for more than one property tax exemption in NYS?

Yes-You are! Don't be fooled-take back your gold-saids Maryann Maltese. Qualified homeowners who meet various property tax exemptions can be eligible for more than one NYS provided Property Tax Exemptions-verification of by your DD-214 is required. No income requirements are necessary to be eligible for the State Veterans Exemption.

For example; A Veteran who served during a major combat and resigned with honors or left service admirably-is also eligible to receive the NYS Star Exemption Program at the same time. If the Veteran is also of Senior Age (age 65) and meets additional financial eligibility requirements ($29,000-$37,999.99-Suffolk County); this Homeowner and or Cooperative Share Holder is eligible for a 3rd Property Tax Exemption benefit applied to their Primary Residence. (STAR Program, Veterans and the Senior Citizens Exemptions. All qualified Homeowners; including Cooperative Share Holders that meet age and financial requirements for the various property tax exemptions provided by New York State-can be applied to the Owners Primary residence. Share-Holders of Cooperatives receive disconnects of their Maintenance Dues from Management.

I always recommend filling out all the property tax exemptions NYS offers; especially if one is a Veteran; said Maryann Maltese. Tomorrow-the best way to recognize veterans service-is to remind them of and on the programs and benefits (even property exemptions) they are entitled too. Check your primary residences property assessment to ensure that all eligible property tax exemptions you applied for (March 1) and received approval on are listed. If these exemptions are not listed as some Local Taxing Authorities require annual or bi-annual (re)certification a qualified homeowner would not want to be eliminated from their eligibility of property tax exemptions.
